The United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration aims to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems every continent. Disturbances stemming from anthropogenic or natural causes make plant community restoration challenging. introduction fast-growing weeds that generate high biomass produce copious seed is most threatening communities. Posttreatment tree mortality after forest ecological restoration, Arizona, United States.
Pine-oak forests are of high ecological importance worldwide, but many are threatened by uncharacteristically severe wildfire. Forest restoration treatments, including the reintroduction of a surface fire regime, are intended to decrease fire hazard and emulate historic ecosystem structure and function. Restoration has recently received much management attention and short-term study, but little...

متن کاملSoil Carbon Addition Controls Weeds and Facilitates Prairie Restoration
Soil nitrogen enrichment and consequent vigorous weed growth are thought to hinder the restoration of tallgrass prairie. Adding carbon to the soil may facilitate prairie restoration by inducing immobilization of plant-available nitrogen. Early attempts to use this method, however, have had mixed results. Success of C addition depends on three conditions: weeds must suppress prairie species in t...
متن کاملEcological Restoration, Global Challenges, Social Aspects and Environmental Benefits
This book consists of 14 chapters covering important aspects in regards to various terrestrial ecosystems, wetlands, river systems, mine site rehabilitation, marsh ecology and heavy metals pollution. Also aims to fill some of the information gaps in ecological restoration, particularly in under-researched ecosystems around the world. Restoration ecology emerged as a separate field in ecology in...
متن کاملEthical issues in ecological restoration
The acid test of humankind’s relationship to natural systems is the degree to which ecological damage caused by humans is repaired by humans. Technology and science are available, so the remaining stimulus needed for implementation of ecological restoration is the ethical responsibility to do so. Ecological restoration can be regarded as enlightened self-interest for humankind since it increase...
